Being A Force For Good
Business as a force for good is a phrase that resonates with our team and is at the forefront of everything we strive for in our day to day operations. People and the planet are central to our thoughts and actions, from looking after our staff and clients to ensuring our services have as little impact on the planet as possible.
The business as a force for good movement, proliferated by B Corp and others, has shown businesses and their audiences that there is a different way to do business. In our case, we have found that there is a need for attention on low carbon website design. It’s possible to have a website that pops in messaging and visuals, works hard for your business and is kind to the planet too!
Low Carbon Design
In 2022, there are approximately 5.03 billion web users worldwide. According to the online carbon calculator Website Carbon, on average, 0.5g of CO2 is released each time someone visits a single webpage.
From data centres, servers and transmission networks to the billions of connected devices we hold in our hands, they all consume electricity and produce carbon emissions. These account for approximately 3.7% of all greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than the aviation industry!
We build sustainable websites that not only operate on low-carbon emissions and are hosted on renewable energy but also deliver results!
Our collaborative, staged approach considers all aspects of website design, branding, SEO, conversion optimisation, hosting, UI and UX to ensure market-leading results.
100% Renewable Energy Hosting
Web servers are physical pieces of hardware that house and make your website available for viewing online. These web servers live in datacentres and are constantly ticking away 24/7.
Not surprisingly, data centres require an incredible amount of electricity. This is not only to keep those servers going but also to keep them from overheating. The carbon footprint of this web hosting activity is reflected in your own carbon footprint, so we want to help businesses cut this out entirely.
When your website is hosted and maintained by Nivo Digital on our renewable hosting plan, you can sleep soundly in the knowledge that your website’s server infrastructure runs on 100% renewable energy.

How can we help?
In a nutshell, we will work out how offsetting could best benefit you and the climate. We will apply a carbon audit on your entire website, calculating its total carbon footprint over a period of time. The audit will report on how much carbon offsetting you are recommended before and after improvements on your website, whether you choose to become low-carbon, net-zero or carbon negative. We will select highly effective carbon offsetting options, which are certified to international standards.
Renewables
Supporting renewable projects is arguably the best form of offsetting, as these address the focal problem: burning fossil fuels for energy.
Wind projects are thought to be the most sustainable with added socio-economic benefits, offering new jobs and helping an area or country become energy-independent.
Certified Schemes
Certified schemes, such as Gold Standard Climate+ Projects, have wider socio-economic benefits. These could be employment, health or biodiversity improvements or more transformational changes, such as political and educational. Schemes include fair trade projects, helping communities reduce their own carbon emissions, better farming methods, etc.
Tree Planting
Planting trees are controversial offsetting schemes; trees are slow to absorb CO2 and they need to stay in situ for centuries to work as effective carbon stores. With the alarming level of deforestation, resulting in carbon release and habitat loss, offset schemes protecting existing forests, such as REDD projects have become more popular instead.
